This project we completed was featured in the Irish Independent! Article available at: https://www.independent.ie/life/home-garden/homes/my-favourite-room-my-mother-was-in-love-with-dermot-bannon-i-couldnt-believe-when-we-got-him-as-our-architect/a1257457835.html
At Clonlough, we are proud to have played a part in a project that combined timeless elegance with modern design, turning an old priest’s house in Howth into the dream home of entrepreneur Suzanne Fowler and her partner Tim Cummins.
The transformation began when Suzanne fell in love with the property, a charming but neglected house with potential oozing from every corner. The couple, who had rented in Howth before purchasing the house, envisioned creating a space that maximized the stunning views, embraced natural light, and offered warmth and atmosphere. Enter the dream team: Architect Dermot Bannon, Interior designer David Hogan, and, of course, us- Clonlough Contractors.
The renovation was no small task, requiring a careful balance between preserving the home’s historic charm and introducing modern conveniences. Our role at Clonlough included managing the extensive construction work, overseeing the reconfiguration of the existing house, and helping with the integration of the new extension, which houses a light-filled kitchen/dining/living area. With spectacular views over the gardens and the coastal town of Howth, this space became the heart of the home.
One of the challenges was bringing light into every corner of the house. Suzanne was keen on bright, airy rooms, and Dermot’s designs ensured that every room, from the cozy drawing room to the open-plan kitchen, was flooded with natural light. Even the large, contemporary windows, which initially caused some concern, perfectly complement the overall aesthetic, blending old and new with ease.
For Suzanne, the kitchen was a pivotal space, and we worked closely with her and Andrew Ryan to create a classic yet functional room. The hand-painted sage-green units and marble island are just a few of the details that make this kitchen special. It’s a space where Suzanne can entertain friends and family in style while enjoying the view of the garden that we helped shape into a welcoming oasis.
Throughout the renovation, our foreman, Michael, played a key role in ensuring everything ran smoothly. His expertise and attention to detail, as well as his introduction of Suzanne to David Hogan, were integral to achieving the home’s sophisticated and inviting aesthetic. But it wasn’t all about the house itself-Suzanne and Tim made sure that the outdoor space was equally as important. The garden features a “beach” area covered in sand, multiple patio areas for sunbathing, and a “shed” at the end of the garden that’s fully equipped with a barbecue, pizza oven, and even beer on tap. The result is an inviting home that’s perfect for both relaxation and entertaining.
As Suzanne says, the renovation process was challenging, but her laid-back attitude and determination ensured everything came together beautifully. “I love this house so I won’t move from here, but I’d do the work again in a heartbeat. I love a project,” she said with a smile.
At Clonlough, we take pride in every project we undertake, but this one holds a special place in our hearts. It’s always a pleasure to see our work come to life in such a meaningful way, and we’re thrilled to have contributed to Suzanne and Tim’s dream home in Howth.
This project is a perfect example of what happens when a passionate client, a talented team, and skilled builders come together to create something truly special. And for us at Clonlough, it’s a reminder of the joy we get from transforming houses into homes.
