At Clonlough, we specialise in the careful balance of preserving the past while integrating the necessities of the present. This delicate process is especially crucial when it comes to the restoration and conservation of historic buildings, where the integrity of the structure must be maintained while adapting it for contemporary use. One of our recent projects, the conservation and renovation of the Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse, perfectly embodies this approach.
A Case Study: Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse
Originally built in 1791, the Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse holds a special place in the local community, both as a cherished landmark and as a piece of architectural history. Classified as a Protected Structure, this project required meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to conservation standards. Our goal was to preserve its historic character while creating functional spaces for modern use.
Our work on the Monkstown Schoolhouse involved conservation-based repairs to the structure, fabric, and building services. Every decision we made was informed by our commitment to safeguarding its historic value. For instance, we carefully removed non-original internal walls on the Ground Floor, opening up the space while maintaining the integrity of the original layout. On the First Floor, we refurbished the existing structure to create a new 2-bedroom apartment, offering updated, functional living spaces within the historic framework.
In addition, we constructed a new single-storey extension on the North elevation, designed to blend seamlessly with the existing architecture. This new addition houses essential modern amenities, including toilets, service rooms, and a pedestrian entrance complete with accessible steps and ramps. The extension was thoughtfully designed to enhance the building’s utility without detracting from its historic character.
Honouring Tradition: Preserving Original Features
Throughout the project, we adhered to the latest conservation guidelines, ensuring that the original fabric of the building was preserved wherever possible. We restored the original roof and its decorative finishes, as well as the original windows, glass, timber paneling, and doors. Every element was carefully examined and either repaired or replaced with materials that matched the original in both style and quality.
One of the most unique aspects of this project was the reuse of salvaged materials. We salvaged granite blocks from an old wall on the property and repurposed them to enhance the schoolhouse garden area. This not only maintained the building’s historic connection to its surroundings but also demonstrated our commitment to sustainability in restoration.
While preservation was paramount, the Monkstown Schoolhouse also needed to function as a modern space. We transformed the building’s interior to meet contemporary needs, creating versatile spaces for parish meetings and activities. The renovated schoolhouse now includes a multipurpose meeting hall, a parish office, and fully accessible facilities, ensuring the building serves the community in new and meaningful ways.
Blending the Old with the New
The conservation of historic buildings like the Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse requires a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship while skillfully incorporating modern construction techniques. At Clonlough, we pride ourselves on this delicate balance, ensuring that each project we undertake honours the past while embracing the future.
By preserving the unique character of the Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse and adapting it for today’s needs, we have ensured that this historic landmark will continue to serve the community for many years to come.
