This project called for the full extent of our conservation and restoration expertise. Our brief was to restore and reimagine a dilapidated Regency villa, transforming it into a functional and inviting family home while preserving its historic character.
When our clients purchased this Protected Structure, they were drawn to its magnificent original features, including high ceilings, ornate cornicing, sash windows, and period fireplaces. However, the layout of the house was outdated, and significant restoration work was required to meet the needs of a young family.
The original design, featured impressive reception rooms overlooking the garden, which were underutilised. A small sitting room and kitchen faced a side passage, leaving them dark and disconnected from the heart of the home. Working closely with the architects, the layout was re-imagined by relocating the open plan family space to the main reception rooms, which now enjoy a seamless connection to the garden via a raised terrace.
To address the lack of flow between floors, we constructed a modern glass-box staircase extension, linking the previously isolated lower ground floor with the rest of the house. This space now serves as a vibrant hub for the family, including a games room, home office, and guest bedroom, all with direct garden access.
On the ground floor, the former formal drawing room was carefully transformed into an open-plan kitchen and dining area, combining contemporary functionality with the room’s original period features. French doors were added to maximise natural light and create a direct connection to the garden terrace, making it an ideal space for family living and entertaining.
Close collaboration between all parties ensured every detail was thoughtfully considered and executed to the highest standard. The result is a beautifully restored and reconfigured home that retains its historic charm while meeting the practical needs of modern family life.
