Project Details

We successfully completed a comprehensive conservation and renovation project at the historic Monkstown Parish Schoolhouse, a cherished local landmark originally built in 1791. Recognised as a Protected Structure, this historic building underwent extensive and strict restoration works, preserving its unique character while adapting it for modern use.

Architect:

Tony Mullen Architects

Our work included conservation based repairs to the structure, fabric and building services. We carefully demolished non original internal walls on the ground floor and refurbished the first floor to create a new 2 bedroom apartment. A new single storey extension providing new toilets, service rooms and a pedestrian entrance with accessible steps and ramps was constructed.

The restored schoolhouse now features versatile spaces for parish meetings and activities, including a multipurpose meeting hall, a parish office, and accessible facilities. Throughout the project, we adhered to the latest conservation guidelines, preserving as much of the original historic fabric as possible. This included restoring the original roof, decorative roof finishes, windows, glass, timber paneling, and doors. Granite blocks from existing walls were re-used throughout the project.
